Blog reflection 12/14/12

What we been doing in reading groups is reading a book called Where WTLB. We been doing in reading groups we been reading the chapters in the book. Then, we were answering questions after we read a chapter. We also highlight the answers for the questions in the book.  The plot of the story is that Mary Call and the sibling are keeping a secret that their dad died from other people in the story. Also trying to keep a secret from Kiser and the Connell’s because they are always wondering where Roy Luther is.  I think the book is very interesting and has lots of things happening to Mary Call and the family.  Also some conflicts happening after the dad died.  Some of the themes in this book are family, a nice sharing friend, caring for each other; know where they are and what’s coming up conflicts.

I am like a snowflake

Because I am fun

When people think of the snow

They will get happy

And excited

I am reflective

Because I can reflect

Into the past

Snowflakes are made out of water

And I am made out of water too

And sometimes you can see

It when you are sad

When you cry

You will see the water

ccommunity service project

What we did last week was that we went to two community service projects near our school. They looked kind of small from the outside, but in the inside was big. We learned how they help the people and what they do there for a certain amount of time. What we did there was we got a tour of the Georgia Justice Project and the Genesis Shelter and we got to see the rooms. I learned that they keep the families at the Genesis Shelter for six months. They have babies from newborn to six months. The community service is valuable because you are giving time to help them and giving things like food and clothing and toys that they need.  We are collecting things that the families need for the Genesis Shelter. We are collecting things from people around our school.so we can bring it to the Genesis Shelter for the homeless families there.

Weekly Reflection 11/13/12

What we learned this week about the Appalachian culture is that back then the Appalachian people used to tell stories. What they still did was singing and dancing. They used to hunt rabbits with their dogs to find them. What else they did was that they would exaggerate their stories to the real life. They used to hand make their own instruments and their own toys.  The girls could not talk to boys. The boys had to chase the girls to talk to them. The people in Appalachia had different accents then now later in life.

Getting taken from my house

From white man

On to the trail

To Oklahoma

In the west

Now to a prison camp

With my own kind

Cold

Less food

Barely have anything to sleep on

And underneath

Three months passed

Body in very much agony

Can barely walk

Any farther

Somewhere getting close

Couple months later

We got to Oklahoma

Now we make our homes

And get good food to eat

And then rest for a very long night

Trail of Tears blog reflection

What I am going to talk about is the Trail of Tears. The Trail of Tears was held in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, and North Carolina. There was a removal of the Cherokees to the west. It was sad for the people on the Trail of Tears because they had to move out of their homes that they stayed for a very long time. There were lots of people on the Trail of Tears and lots of Indians and other people and animals that went with them died on the Trail of Tears. The Cherokee’s land is special and if the Cherokee leave the land the Cherokee will feel like they will die If they leave the land. It is special to them. The Cherokees don’t want to leave the land, but the white people made a treaty with the Cherokees that said that they would have to leave the land so they can find gold on the land and the Cherokee have to move west.

The Cherokee people

On the Trail of Tears

Sad

Getting treated horribly

Getting dragged

Out of homes

To the stockades

Lots of walking

Very far away

To the west

People dying

Along the way

From their homes

That they lived for a long time

Dahlonega 10/26/12

This week on Wednesday we went to Dahlonega. It was really cool and fun. We got to pan for some gold. Some people did not get any gold. Before the trip we learned about where the gold is in Georgia. Then we learned what Hernando de Soto did when he came to find gold. The third thing is we learned about the Trail of Tears and the Cherokee Indians. What we learned in the museum was how the stamp mill work and how it was used with gold. The next thing we learned was how they made gold coins. The third thing we learned was that the top of the college and the state capital building have gold on them. The thing we learned in the mine was how big it is. The gold is so small in the mine that you can’t see it around you. We learned about how many stories are in the mine and how long it is.

Cloudland Canyon

Last Tuesday, we went to Cloudland Canyon.  The three cool things I saw were the rock overhang, the waterfalls, and the sandstone.  What we learned before we went was the wet weather waterfalls, sole marks, and ripple marks.  When we were there we also filmed a vocabulary movie where we had to say vocab words in the movie.  I thought the trip was very cool, interesting and the canyon was big.

Wet like rain

Amazing

Arabia Mountain

Last Tuesday, we went to Arabia Mountain.  The first activity we did was poetry. We stopped some times to write some poetry.  We wrote some poetry about whatever we saw on the mountain.  The next thing we did was take some pictures of plants and wildlife.  Next, we hiked up the mountain and when we got up to the top of the side of the mountain we sat on top of a boulder and wrote one last poem.  Last, at the top of the mountain we measured a weathering pit.

Two similarities between Stone Mountain and Arabia Mountain are that they are both in GA and they have the stages of succession.  The differences are that Stone Mountain is bigger than Arabia Mountain and Arabia Mountain is more isolated than Stone Mountain.

Oakland Pic/Poem

We had to pick a word that represented Oakland Cemetery.  My word was family.  We had to go around the cemetery and take pictures of the letters in our word. Then I wrote a poem about family. My poem described that many people in the Oakland cemetery have relatives or a family that is buried together.
Here is my poem and picture:

Oakland Word Poem

Graves near each other are like books in a library
Name on gravestones
Gravestones say when their birthday is and when they died
Some gravestones tell how the person died
Most gravestones don’t say how they died
Makes you sad
You would bring flowers
You would ask why they had to die
Lonely as a quiet place
Lots of statues
Symbols
Religions
Went to heaven
Stone with last name
They are a family

Weekly Reflection 9/7

I am learning about the Georgia’s watersheds and the Georgia’s rivers and lakes.  I learned about where the lakes and rivers are in Georgia and I learned about the different parts of the brain.  Also I learned about Phineas Gage and how he died. Another thing I learned this week was about neurons and how they work.  I think I did well this week because I took my time on the word of the day test.  My goal for next week is to do my homework on time and to stay out of homework hall.
